Your Phone Is a Pocket‑Sized Physics Experiment (Mostly About Attention)

If an object spends more time in your hand than anything else you own, it probably deserves a physics‑level look.

Your phone is not just a piece of electronics.
It is a device that constantly negotiates for your attention using light, sound and tiny bits of motion.

From the outside: glass, metal, circuits.
From the inside: a continuous experiment on how easily a human can be pulled away from whatever they were just doing.

Attention as a finite resource

In physics, we talk about limited resources: energy, fuel, charge.

Attention behaves very similarly:

  • it can be focused or scattered,
  • it can be refreshed or depleted,
  • it moves towards whatever has strongest signal.

Your phone is designed to emit strong signals:

  • bright screen,
  • colour, movement, notifications,
  • small red circles that feel strangely important.

None of this is evil.
It is simply physics of stimuli.

Micro‑forces acting on your focus

Every notification is like a small force applied to your mental trajectory.

You’re reading, working, thinking, then:

  • ping → you rotate a bit towards your messages,
  • flash → you tilt towards news,
  • badge → you lean into apps.

One or two forces are manageable.
Hundreds per day create something that, from a physics perspective, looks a lot like constant vibration.

We don’t usually describe our attention that way.
We just say: “I can’t concentrate.”

Why “just have more willpower” misses the point

If you put a lightweight object in a room with strong magnetic fields and it keeps moving, you don’t blame the object for being “weak”.

You ask about the fields.

Similarly, if your focus keeps jumping, the question is less:

  • “What’s wrong with me?”

and more:

  • “How strong are the signals I live inside?”

Willpower is useful.
But expecting it to cancel out every external force is a generous fantasy.

Felix’s experiment with phone physics

You don’t have to throw the phone away.
You can change the experiment.

  1. Reduce signal strength.
    • turn off non‑essential notifications,
    • remove badges,
    • use greyscale for a few hours as a test.
  2. Limit exposure time.
    • decide on a few windows in the day when the phone is allowed to scream for your attention,
    • outside those windows, it becomes a quiet tool, not a constant experiment.
  3. Watch what happens to your “vibration”.
    • does your focus feel less shaky?
    • does your day feel slightly longer?

If you notice even a small change, that is physics giving you feedback.
Attention behaves like a resource because it is one.
Your phone is not an enemy, but it does deserve a safety manual.
