Why Coincidences Are Not Secret Messages (Most of the Time)

You open your inbox and see a message from someone you just thought about. You look at the clock and it shows 11:11. You meet an old friend in a city neither of you lives in. Your brain whispers: “The universe is trying to tell me something.” Physics raises an eyebrow and quietly brings a calculator.

The brain that hates empty space

Your brain hates empty space in stories.
When two events line up in a strange way, it immediately tries to connect them:

  • “I thought of her, then she wrote — this must mean something.”
  • “The number keeps repeating — this must be a sign.”

From an evolutionary point of view, this made sense.
Better to see one tiger too many than one too few.
But in a world full of notifications, numbers and humans, this instinct behaves like a smoke detector installed in a kitchen: it goes off way more often than it should.

Probability is boring, which is a problem

Coincidences feel magical because probability feels boring.

If I tell you:

“There is a high chance that in a room of 30 people two share a birthday.”

your intuition says: “No way.”

If I show you the math, you will probably nod politely, change nothing about your life and continue to treat birthday matches as mystical fate.

The problem is not that the universe is sending messages.
The problem is that we underestimate how often strange alignments happen in large systems full of events.

Your life as a giant lottery of patterns

Every day you scroll through hundreds of posts, emails, faces, numbers, sounds.
Most of them pass unnoticed.

Occasionally, two things line up:

  • you think of a song, it plays on the radio,
  • you dream of a place, then see it in a movie,
  • you say a word at the exact moment someone else does.

Out of millions of moments, a few will look scripted.
It would be shocking if nothing ever aligned in a way that felt strange.

Calling that “fate” is like winning ten euros in a lottery and assuming the government loves you personally.

When coincidences do matter

Sometimes coincidences matter — but usually because you choose to make them matter.

You might decide:

  • “This is a good moment to finally call her,”
  • “Seeing this again reminds me I care about it,”
  • “This is a nudge to pay attention.”

That is fine.
Just do not confuse your choice to assign meaning
with evidence that the universe is running a personalised theatre performance for you.

How Felix suggests you treat “signs”

Try this:

  1. When something feels like a sign, say quietly:
    “Interesting coincidence. Let me check how often this could happen by chance.”
  2. Ask yourself:
    • How many similar moments do I ignore when they do not line up?
    • How many events happen every day that could create this pattern?
  3. Only then decide if you want to treat it as meaningful.

In most cases, the universe is not whispering secret instructions.
It is just doing statistics.

The nice twist is this: your freedom comes not from decoding messages,
but from deciding what to do with the noise.
