Modern culture treats “energy” like a moral score. If you are tired, you are failing. If you are productive, you are a hero. Physics has a simpler view: energy is the capacity to do work in a given system. Sometimes the system is full, sometimes the tank is empty, and neither state says anything deep about your worth as a person.
The myth of infinite battery mode
We act as if the human body were a phone with an unlimited data plan and a battery that never dies.
Then reality quietly demonstrates:
- sleep debt behaves like interest,
- stress drains energy even when you sit still,
- and your brain has limited bandwidth whether you admit it or not.
From the outside it looks like laziness.
From the inside it is often just conservation of energy: your system trying not to collapse under load.
Work, heat and that mysterious thing called “being exhausted”
In physics, when a system does work, energy is transferred.
Some of it becomes useful output.
Some becomes heat — waste, noise, side effects.
Your day is similar:
- part of your energy goes into tasks,
- part leaks into anxiety, multitasking, interruptions, doomscrolling.
If you wonder why you are exhausted after “doing nothing”,
check how much energy was spent on constantly switching attention, worrying, and resisting distractions.
The machine did work. It just was not the work you had planned.
Why “push harder” is not always smart
There is a point at which adding more force to a system does not fix it — it breaks it.
- Push a bridge beyond its load capacity and it collapses.
- Push a material beyond its elastic limit and it snaps.
- Push a human nervous system beyond its energy budget and it starts inventing creative new ways to malfunction.
Calling that malfunction “lack of discipline” is like blaming a snapped metal beam for not believing in itself enough.
A more useful question than “What’s wrong with me?”
Instead of asking:
“What is wrong with me?”
Felix would suggest:
“What is the actual state of the system?”
- How much sleep, really?
- How much noise, really?
- How many simultaneous demands, really?
- How much recovery, honestly?
Energy is not a moral rating.
It is a number that responds to inputs.
If the inputs are bad, the number goes down.
You do not fix that with motivational quotes.
You fix it with better physics.
